Outdoor Living, Here We Come!

Not sure where you are, readers, but I am in lovely Louisville, Kentucky, where the temperature topped 80 degrees today – Yeah! I truly did not think I was going to make it through this past winter, and Louisville is in the South! I want flowers, mulch, and lawn furniture, and I want it now!

Outdoor Living Spaces

Apparently, so does everyone else because despite a dismal economy, homeowners are still spending money on Outdoor Living spaces. According to a survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), homeowners are “still very much interested in creating livable outdoor spaces that function like indoor rooms.” That’s not to say that we aren’t trimming back on some of our preferences. Gone are the fully outfitted kitchens and high-end audio/visual entertainment systems.

The most popular features for 2011 include exterior lighting, fire pits and fireplaces, and seating/dining areas. And although homeowners are paying greater attention to sustainability and conservation, water features continue to be a popular addition to these spaces. I am no exception – this spring my husband and I are attempting to build a fire pit in an area with drainage and dog-digging problems. If you don’t hear from me in a while, you’ll know we are experiencing some technical difficulties!

Outdoor Accessories

Of course, no blog of mine would be complete without talking accessories. Outdoor drapery panels are a must if you want to make your outdoor space function like an indoor room. Pillows, pillows, and more pillows…just make sure the fabric is weather-resistant. Now, you know I am not a fan of florals on the inside, but the more flowers & plants, the merrier! These are what makes House2Home!
