Updating A Family Home – Living Room
In this week’s blog, we will continue our series on Updating A Family Home by concentrating on the Living Room.
This room was the gathering place for family functions and entertaining guests; however, when it was just the couple at home, this was the main television viewing area. It had to accommodate a large group of people as well as a large television!
Two Focal Points
The room had two distinctive focal points – an impressive stone fireplace with raised hearth and a two-store bay window that looked out onto their spectacular acreage.
Source of Inspiration
Our jumping off point for design was the large vibrant area rug that the homeowners had recently purchased.
We purchased a sofa with beautiful nailhead detail and an interesting back which you saw when you walked into the room; a leather recliner for the husband to use for television viewing; a chair and ottoman in two coordinating fabrics for the wife; an accent chair to round out the conversation area and a bench strategically placed in the bay window that could serve as extra seating.
We flanked the fireplace with a open faced television cabinet and a bookshelf which we accessorized with family photos and keepsakes. The bay window was dressed with 120″ drapery panels in two fabrics hung on short decorative walls. These panels frame with windows nicely without disrupting the gorgeous view. The homeowner commissioned original artwork for above the mantel.
The result is a warm, elegant space that functions well for the couple and their guests. Enjoy!
