Rooms Done Right: Sunroom
The second installment of our blog series: Rooms Done Right focuses on one of my most favorite rooms I have ever designed…and it’s a Sunroom!
This sunroom is SO full of texture and interesting materials. The color palette is a breath of fresh air. And to think this started out as the homeowners’ least favorite room in the house.
The biggest challenge of the space was how exposed it was to the neighboring houses. The homeowners love texture so it was the perfect application for woven roman shades. Woven shades have come a long way – you can now find them in a variety of colors and textures. We chose one with a blue gray thread running through it to pull from the fireplace slate. We added a liner that matched the siding on the Sunroom so that when the shades were lowered, there was a consistent look from the exterior.
The real challenge came with what to do over the fireplace. A woven shade would not work so we thought of a “floral” screen or hedge. The mantel was very narrow @ 8 inches, but the homeowner was able to find these tin planters that fit perfectly. I took the homeowners to Jan’s Floral Designs where we found all of these interesting textural branches. The result is not only fabulous, but solves the privacy issue as well.
For furnishings, the homeowners loved these seagrass club chairs from Pottery Barn. Since the chairs were oversized, we selected armless chairs upholstered in this striking medallion fabric for additional seating. We had pillows in a coordinating fabric made for the club chairs. We added another layer of texture with an ottoman on casters in a weathered leather fabric.
For finishing touches, we added small drink tables – a must for every chair. The homeowner found this sisal rug in the perfect blue color. We filled the black corner with a plant in a vibrant blue ceramic planter. Next to the sliding door leading into the Kitchen was the perfect spot this fun bar cart accessorized with decanters and glasses.
Now that this Room is Done Right, it has become one of the homeowners’ favorite spots in their home!
